Ruben Amorim endured another Manchester United low in the Carabao Cup.

United had already been warned before the opener, with Grimsby striking the bar from a corner moments earlier.

Charles Vernam found space inside the penalty box and wasted no time rifling a shot past Andre Onana at his near post.

The ball squeezed into the net, sending Blundell Park into absolute chaos.

United’s misery deepened when Onana rushed out for a cross, and completely missed it.

The ball dropped kindly to Grimsby’s Tyrell Warren, who tapped into an empty net to make it 2-0.

But Manchester United clawed their way back in the final 15 minutes, with Bryan Mbeumo pulling one back before Harry Maguire struck to drag the tie into a penalty shootout.

What followed was a remarkable shootout that ended 12-11 in Grimsby’s favour after Mbeumo rattled the crossbar with his spot-kick.

United even had the chance to seal victory at 4-4 when Matheus Cunha stepped up, but the summer signing saw his effort saved, and Grimsby went on to book a stunning place in the third round.

The misses were by the big money summer signings, ESPN says on X.

The pressure on Ruben Amorim has reached new heights after Manchester United’s humiliating defeat to Grimsby.

The 40-year-old is under serious scrutiny, with just one win in his last seven games and a win rate barely above 37% since taking charge, per the BBC.

Saturday’s clash against newly promoted Burnley at Old Trafford could be pivotal, as Amorim himself admitted after the loss that his players may no longer be fighting for him.

He said via Sky Sports:

"In the end, it doesn't matter if we recover or not, it's the signs the team gave during the game, the beginning of the game.
"I think the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch.
"The best players lose because one team can win against any group of players, and I think the team and the players spoke really loud today, so that's it. We lost, the best team won."
