Outside Havana, a combine belonging to a private Vietnamese company is harvesting rice, directly farming Cuban land -- in a first -- to help address acute food shortages in the country. Vietnam has advised Cuba on rice cultivation in the past but this is the first time a private firm has done the farming itself.

An investigation conducted by the World Economic Forum's board on Friday cleared the body's founder Klaus Schwab and his wife of wrongdoing, after a probe into whistleblower complaints. "Following a thorough review of all facts, the Board has concluded that ... there is no evidence of material wrongdoing by Klaus Schwab," the board announced.

US retail sales rose moderately in July, according to data released Friday, as markets monitor tariffs that do not so far appear to have significantly battered consumers. Analysts described the report as solid, but some pointed to a greater risk of weakening in retail sales in the second half of 2025 following disappointing recent labor market data.
