The festival, celebrated annually by the Ga ethnic group, commemorates the resilience of the tribe during a famine that plagued its people and a subsequent harvest which saved them.

Hence, the term Homowo means 'hooting at hunger' in the Ga language.

Every year, the Ga traditional council places a ban on noise-making for the period preceding the festival.

As such, clapping, the use of tambourines, loudspeakers and other musical instruments is prohibited.

Funeral rites and related activities are also suspended until one week after the ban is lifted.

The period of silence leading up to the festival serves as a time of reflection before the joyous celebrations commence.

Serwaa Amihere was spotted at the La Kpa Sulemɔ, a significant ritual as part of the Homowo festival, which involves sacred chanting, drumming, and dancing.

It takes place on the main Homowo festival day, a Wednesday known as 'kpashor' after the traditional food, kpokpoi, has been sprinkled.
