Speaking to party members on Saturday, August 23, 2025, Dr Bryan Acheampong claimed that the Kusasis refused to vote for the NPP because Dr Bawumia is a Mamprusi.
However, responding to this, Dr Bawumia, who was the 2024 presidential candidate of the NPP, expressed disappointment in Bryan Acheampong's statement, describing it as "religious and tribal bigotry."
“As we go into the primaries, I am very concerned and troubled that some of our presidential aspirants have embarked on religious and tribal bigotry and propaganda against me. In a desperate attempt to win votes, they totally ignore the data and findings on why we lost the 2024 election and want to mislead delegates and the party wings with such propaganda,” he said.
Responding to Bawumia's comments, Dr Bryan Acheampong categorically denied making any tribal comment against the former vice president.

Dr Bryan Acheampong denies Bawumia's allegation
Dr Acheampong, who is the sitting MP for Abetifi, said he only stated the facts surrounding the NPP's defeat at the 2024 polls.
He said the comment he made was backed by data from the last elections, which showed that the NPP had a candidate problem in the Kusasi areas.
“If I meet senior party officials across the board, we should be able to have a frank, private conversation. There are some things we should be able to talk about amongst ourselves. Nothing leaves the room, and when we step out, we agree on what to present to the general public,” he said.

“It cannot be that when we speak frankly among ourselves, it is misinterpreted as something else. I have never made any tribal comments or statements of any kind anywhere in this country. I have stated that the data is clear. There is an NPP problem and a candidate problem, which is unique and has affected us,” he added.
