Ruben Amorim endured another Manchester United low in the Carabao Cup.

On Wednesday evening, the Red Devils were outclassed by League Two side Grimsby in the second round of the competition.

The hosts took a well-earned lead in the first half at Blundell Park after a dominant spell of play.

United had already been warned before the opener, with Grimsby striking the bar from a corner moments earlier.

Charles Vernam found space inside the penalty box and wasted no time rifling a shot past Andre Onana at his near post.

The ball squeezed into the net, sending Blundell Park into absolute chaos.

United’s misery deepened when Onana rushed out for a cross — and completely missed it.

The ball dropped kindly to Grimsby’s Tyrell Warren, who tapped into an empty net to make it 2-0.

But Manchester United clawed their way back in the final 15 minutes, with Bryan Mbeumo pulling one back before Harry Maguire struck to drag the tie into a penalty shootout.

What followed was a remarkable shootout that ended 12-11 in Grimsby’s favour after Mbeumo rattled the crossbar with his spot-kick.

United even had the chance to seal victory at 4-4 when Matheus Cunha stepped up, but the summer signing saw his effort saved, and Grimsby went on to book a stunning place in the third round.

Man United fans slam Amorim after Grimsby defeat

Despite the spirited comeback, furious United fans branded the result Amorim’s lowest point yet.

One fan said:

"Amorim might not be the worst manager in PL history, but this Utd stint is arguably the worst job ever done at a PL club when you factor in club size and squad value".

And another added:

United’s misery deepened after Vernam’s opener, as the Red Devils struggled to keep possession while Grimsby grew in confidence and control.

A cleverly worked short corner carved open space down the left, and the resulting cross was whipped into the box with precision.

This time, there was no reprieve for United - after already seeing one goal chalked off, Tyrell Warren rose highest to power home a header and double the Mariners’ lead.
